Music is your job, so it’s important to understand how getting played translates to getting paid. Here’s what you need to do to for your music to make you money.

How to earn royalties

  1. Before you leave the studio or songwriting session, make sure you've agreed any share splits with your collaborators.

  2. Register your work, including any co-writer shares, using the Register My Music tool so we know the song exists and can track where it’s been played. Check out the Get Paid Guide to understand why accurate metadata is so important to getting paid.

  3. Create accounts with our partners, Soundmouse, DJ Monitor and BMATand upload your music so they can help track usage across venues, festivals and international TV and radio broadcasts.

  4. Report all your live shows as soon as you step off stage so we can match the music used with the works you've registered with us.

  5. Make sure your bank details are kept up to date so that the money you've earned is heading to the right place.

  6. Shout about your success! We love seeing where your music has been used on #PRSDay (this info’s available in your online statement) – join the conversation on socials when the quarterly payment drops.

Receiving your royalties
Typically, you’ll receive royalties in the April, July or December distribution once your total has reached £30 for UK bank accounts or £60 for international accounts.

To make sure all your royalties reach you, each October we pay out royalties £1 and above (for UK bank accounts) — find out more

Sometimes we're unable to identify who to pay when music is used. This could be due to incomplete metadata or because the work wasn’t registered when the use was reported to us.

Click on ‘Check Unpaid Royalties’ on your account homepage to find out how to claim any royalties that may belong to you.
