The Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) is marking World Intellectual Property day with new figures showing it has diverted more than 10.3m illegal music and film sites.

Since the unit launched in September 2013, the team has been tackling copyright infringing sites in the UK and across the world to help protect the creative industries.

With the diverts, a PIPCU domain suspension page warns the user that the website they are trying to access is currently under investigation by the authorities.

Detective chief inspector Danny Medlycott, head of PIPCU, said ‘PIPCU is proud to support World IP Day by announcing we have now reached more than 10m hits to our warning page after diverting users from illegal music and film services.’

PIPCU was initially funded by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) until June 2015, but in October 2014 it was announced the unit would receive a further £3m to fund the unit until 2017.

Music is the theme for this year’s World Intellectual Property (IP) Day taking place on 26 April.
