North London haunt Total Refreshment Centre (TRC) has temporarily shut its doors after receiving a notice of closure from Hackney Council.
The space, which is prized for its innovative jazz, electronic and leftfield programming, launched in 2012 in what was originally a social club.
In a statement issued by the venue, it said: ‘As of this week we won’t be having events at TRC for a little while. The council has issued us with a notice of closure. We will know more in the coming weeks, but for now we're going to stay quiet.
‘During this down time, we will need your help to keep the TRC ship afloat until better days come. Change is not always a bad thing, we'll adapt and find new ways to connect with y'all. We're still here, same spot, same people, same skills and network, same passion for music and culture.’
Hackney Council has issued its own statement, saying: ‘The premises is under investigation and has been issued with a closure notice for allegedly selling alcohol and playing music without the relevant licences.’
Commenting further on Twitter, the council added: ‘We'll speak to the venue owners and get our investigation completed as quickly as possible.’
However, the future of key gigs in the TRC programme remain uncertain, including the upcoming Maximum Joy and Dennis Bovell night, the regular Love Carnival night and Soccer96’s upcoming album launch party.
Alongside the venue, TRC also has a large multi-use main space, a recording studio, rehearsal facilities and a variety of custom studio workshops.
Commenting on the closure, NK-OK, from electronic/jazz duo Blue Lab Beats, told M: 'Me and Mr DM have been to the Total Refreshment Centre many, many times - we have seen some incredible acts there such as Maxwell Owen, Black Milk. Melo Zed and Ezra Collective. I had my first New Years’ Eve club night there when I'd just turned 18 and it's BoilerRoom's home! It really would be a disaster for London if we lose this venue.
