Gruff Rhys, Thumpers and Jungle are among the first wave of bands confirmed to play at this year’s Liverpool Sound City.

The festival will take place across a range of venues in Liverpool 1-3 May 2014 - Kodaline, Fuck Buttons and Clean Bandit, the UK’s current number one act in the singles chart.

A second wave of acts is expected to be unveiled in February while the Velvet Underground’s John Cale and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth have been announced as speakers at the conference.

David Pichilingi, chief executive officer of the event, said: ‘It’s shaping up to be the best Sound City to date.

‘We have always strived to bring the best to Liverpool and we have definitely delivered this year on both the live and conference side.’
