The Riot Ensemble Composer Workshops
PRS for Music partnered with acclaimed new music ensemble The Riot Ensemble and award-winning artist and composer Mira Calix to offer composers the chance to take part in a development and recording workshops for solo or chamber ensemble and electronics during 2020.
What was involved?
Five composers had the opportunity to attend three days of workshops in London on 24 – 25 April and 12 September 2020. Composers took part in professional development sessions with industry experts and workshop their ideas for any combination of the following instruments:
bass clarinet, bassoon, percussion (1 player), piano, double bass and electronics
Previous experience of electronics was not a requirement – we welcomed composers from different backgrounds and levels of experience. The electronics involved live processing, amplification, and up to four-channel playback.
These workshops were an opportunity to revisit an existing work or try something new, while receiving feedback from The Riot Ensemble and Mira Calix in a supportive environment. Composers also receive audio recordings of the workshops for private and public use.
After the final workshop, one composer received a paid commission to write a new work for solo performer with electronics for The Riot Ensemble’s 2021 season.
