December 2022 Distribution update

Over £200 million in royalties paid to PRS members in December.  

In our first distribution on 15 December, we’re paying out over £155 million, an increase of £41 million and 36% more than this time last year.

The royalties paid out included those from live performances and music played or streamed in public places like pubs, cafes, and shops (Public Performance), which is up 94% on December 2021, from on-demand video services like Netflix and Amazon Prime (GEOL – General Entertainment Online), from broadcast including TV and radio, and from music that’s played or performed outside of the UK (Overseas – International). 

It also includes money previously held from the French Society SACEM, payments from the American Society ASCAP and Non-Live Public Performance Analogies. 

In our second distribution on 22 December, we’re paying out a further £45 million, an increase of £14 million and 47% more than last year.

The royalties paid out are from digital and streaming services (MTOL – Multi Territory Online), like Amazon Music, YouTube and SoundCloud.

It also includes a previously held payment from TikTok and residual payments from Apple Music and Spotify.

  • International royalties - From several societies including a large payment from the American society ASCAP for music used between January and March 2022.  
  • Netflix – For music used on the service between April and June 2022.  
  • Sony PlayStation – For music used on this service in 2021 and 2022.  
  • Public Performance non-live analogies – For music used between July and September 2022 
  • Spotify – for music used on this service between April and July 2022.  
  • Spotify (Residual) – for music used on this service between April 2020 and December 2020. 
  • Apple Music – for music used on this service between April and June 2022 
  • Apple Music (Residual) – for music used on this service between April 2018 and June 2020.  
  • Meta – for music used on this service in 2021. 
  • French Society SACEM - Earlier in the year we reached an agreement with the French Tax authorities following a long-standing dispute over tax payments. These payments have now been distributed for usages from October 2021 to June 2022. 
  • BT Vision GEOD – For music used on this service from January 2019 to December 2020. 
  • TikTok – for music used on this service between January 2014 to June 2020. 
  • Apple GEOL (Q1 2022) - Licensing discussions are ongoing and need to be agreed before payment can be made. 
  • Google GEOL (Q1 2022) - Licensing discussions are ongoing and need to be agreed before payment can be made. 
  • Al Araby (Q4 2021 – Q2 2022) - Licensing discussions are ongoing and need to be agreed before payment can be made. 
  • ITV Hub (Q1 2022) - Data not yet received for accurate reporting.  
  • MTV GEOL (Q1 2013 – Q2 2022) - Licensing discussions are ongoing and need to be agreed before payment can be made. 
  • BT Vision GEOL (Q1 2021 – Q2 2022) - Licensing discussions are ongoing and need to be agreed before payment can be made.
