According to the Financial Times (FT), the Google-owned platform could unveil the service as early as this week, allowing music companies to offer premium music content including behind-the-scenes filming and live streaming from concerts.

The FT source also suggested that as many as 50 channels could launch, run by official YouTube partners, and consumers could subscribe for around $1.99 (£1.28) per channel.

YouTube has denied the reports.

However, if the subscription model catches on, it could bring a sea change for the online video business which, until now, has mainly subsisted on advertising revenue.

It could provide music companies a second source of revenue and promote a premium content model for publishers, songwriters and artists.

YouTube is currently the world’s second largest search engine after parent company Google. It’s also the biggest music discovery platform on the internet.
