Streams from YouTube’s new dedicated music streaming service, YouTube Music, will be counted in the UK Charts.

The data will join similar stats from Spotify, Apple Music and others in determining chart positions, alongside traditional sales data from downloads and physical product.

The Official Charts Company, which compiles the weekly rundowns, has been counting streaming data since 2015.

However, YouTube video plays were never included due to the lack of clear separation between official record label uploads and user created uploads of the same song.

YouTube Music, which was launched yesterday in the UK alongside 10 other territories, is part of YouTube’s continued effort to expand its stake in the digital streaming market.

The service allows users to download, stream and playlist songs to a dedicated app from a vast library of both official releases and user generated content.

The app has already received 50 million downloads on the Google Play Store.
