Five musicians have been named as finalists of the Young Scottish Jazz Music awards taking place in Aberdeen in July.
Brodie Jarvie, a double bass player from Glasgow, Corrie Dick, a drummer from Glasgow, Mark Scobbie, another drummer from Dundee, Sean Gibbs, a trumpet player from Edinburgh and 15 year-old piano player Fergus McCreadie from Dollar are the five musicians shortlisted for the final, which are due to take place at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen on 31 July.
The finalists have been selected after a semi-final mentoring weekend with some of Scotland’s top jazz musicians.
In a statement, organisers the Scottish Jazz Federation, said: ‘This year our 15 year old under 17 winner Fergus McCreadie from Dollar has also been put through to the final. This is highly unusual as there is generally an obvious gap between the standard of musicians in his age group. Not this year!’
The 2013 competition, which is now in its seventh year, has been made possible thanks to investment and sponsorship from Creative Scotland, Aberdeen International Youth Festival and Shell UK.
The winner will receive £1,000 cash, £1,000 towards their first recording, a six date tour of venues in Scotland and further financial support from Shell UK as well as appearing at the Glasgow and London jazz festivals.
A special concert featuring the 2013 winner and previous winners of the award will take place at the Blue Lamp venue in Aberdeen on 1 August.
