Mercury nominated act the Young Knives have launched PRS for Music’s Music Makeover of the new live space at the Railway Inn pub in Oakham.
The inn’s landlord Shaun Jackson beat competition from pubs across the country to win the coveted Music Makeover prize. He secured £10,000 to transform his pub into a vibrant live music venue and unveiled the new music set up with a performance from local band the Young Knives.
Alongside the likes of Kasabian and indie pop band Cornershop, the band are one of Leicester’s latest musical success stories with four critically acclaimed albums and recent Flaming Lips support slot to their name.
Guy Fletcher OBE, PRS chairman, said: ‘Pubs are crucial to maintaining and developing the UK music scene. Many PRS for Music songwriters and composers build their career on the pub circuit.
‘With Music Makeover we are able to recognise - and reward - that unique relationship between the music community and pubs. Shaun Jackson is passionate about supporting local talent and his new music space at the Railway Inn means he can now promote Leicestershire’s music scene all year long.’
Henry Dartnall from the Young Knives said: ‘We toured the local pub and club circuit for years. The grassroots scene is where everyone starts out and these venues are a crucial stepping stone in any artist’s career.
‘Leicestershire will always be our spiritual home so it’s an honour to be here today as the Railway Inn opens its doors to local songwriters and bands.
Figures from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) revealed that a typical pub can add £80,000 each year to its local economy.
