We might be some four months away from Valentine’s Day but that didn’t stop the theme of week two being all about love and heartbreak. And it certainly managed to provide plenty of joy, pain and emotion for contestants and judges alike.

Nicole Scherzinger seems to have been handed a gift this year in mentoring the girls’ category - two of her acts put in hugely well-received vocal powerhouse performances.  Tamera Foster dazzled judges and the studio audience with her version of the Emeli Sande/Labrinth smash Beneath You’re Beautiful.

Meanwhile, fellow teenager Hannah Barrett shone with her rendition of Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful, a song beloved by karaoke singers the world over!

Also delivering strong vocals on the night were 16-year-old Nicholas McDonald, who successfully took on the Karl Wallinger penned Robbie Williams hit She’s the One.

It was also another good week for prison warden Sam Bailey. The 35-year-old easily delivered Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love, though the song has perhaps now become so closely associated with Adele’s interpretation that it can prove tricky for anyone else to really put their own stamp on it.

Passenger’s recent global smash Let Her Go received its X Factor debut via Luke Friend, while Backstreet Boys’ pop classic I Want it That Way took London trio Rough Copy safely through to next week .

Elsewhere, US star Jason Mraz’s I Won’t Give Up not only worked well for Sam Callahan, who was described by Louis Walsh as a ready-made popstar - it also shot up the iTunes chart as a result.

It was a bad week for girl group Miss Dynamix though, who were forced to have a week off due to illness in their camp.  Meanwhile Abi Alton received a lukewarm reception from the judges following an unconvincing stripped down version of Kylie Minogue’s Can’t Get You Out of My Head.

The real heartbreak was reserved for van driver Shelley Smith and boy band Kingsland Road who both ended up in the bottom two.  The five-piece’s take on Bruno Mars’ Marry You was deemed Saturday night’s least popular performance, placing last in the dreaded eight-minute flash vote.

Their shock relegation seemed odd considering they were actually quite good and have already built up a growing fanbase among the show’s voting demographic.

Devon diva Shelley was in the Sunday sing-off for the second week running after an unfortunate version of Beyonce’s Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It), which ended up feeling just a little bit too hen night-esque.

And sure enough, it was Shelley who motored off into the sunset after her take on Sam Brown’s eighties hit Stop was trumped in the judges’ vote by the Gary Barlow-mentored Kingsland Road with Pink’s Try.

Bad news not only for the 34-year-old but also for returning judge Sharon Osbourne who lost a contestant for the second consecutive week, leaving just Sam Bailey standing in the Over 25s category.
