Winter North Atlantic (WNA), the composer behind the Barographic installation at The Sage Gateshead, is to release a new album.

WNA, also known as Ed Carter, will release Phonautogram on 31 October via the Alt Vinyl imprint.

The album, which is Carter’s third, is named after Leon Scott’s phonoautograph, the first sound-recording device and will be launched with a rare live outing at The Sage Gateshead.

WNA is to expand to a seven-piece outfit complete with live double bass and strings to bring the album to life on 31 October. Support will come from Bridie Jackson & The Arbour.

The phonoautograph turns sound into images, producing intricate, smoky drawings without providing any means of playback.

Ed's previous projects include ‘~Flow’ (a floating musical watermill on the Tyne commissioned for the 2012 Olympics), a site-specific graphic-score Barographic (composing with atmospheric pressure and architectural form of the Sage Gateshead) and a Channel 4 commission for The False Lights of Durham, recorded and filmed in Durham Cathedral.
