PRS for Music Foundation is to partner with Wales Art International on its International Showcase Fund (ISF) to help Welsh artists access mentoring and tour support opportunities.
The investment by Arts Council of Wales through its international arm, Wales Arts International, will enable talented Wales based artists to receive not only support to travel to and perform at SXSW in Austin, Texas, but also mentoring and preparation support including networking with other industry partners.
Wales Arts International has supported hundreds of Welsh artists including Sweet Baboo, Gwenno, The Gentle Good, Violet Skies, ESTRONS, Dylan Fowler and Olion Byw to perform at events all over the world.
The ISF is run by PRS for Music Foundation in partnership with the Department for International Trade, Arts Council England, British Underground, Musicians' Union and Pledge Music.
It offers support for English artists to take their first steps into international territories by enabling them to perform at key showcasing festivals and conferences such as Canadian Music Week, SXSW, CMJ and Eurosonic.
Vanessa Reed, PRS for Music Foundation executive director, said: ‘I am delighted to welcome Wales Arts International to the ISF partnership.
‘Their contribution will play a key role in enabling Welsh artists to make their business case to our expert music industry panel, to access the North American market and to showcase their talents to new audiences alongside their English counterparts. I look forward to seeing which talented Welsh and English artists receive support to perform at SXSW 2017 and the impact it will have on the development of their careers.’
In the fund’s most recent report spanning 2013-16, launched in Parliament this year, 89 percent of supported artists returned with tangible business outcomes and every £1 invested by the ISF generated an additional £8.90 in revenues for the supported artist.
Eluned Hâf, head of Wales Arts International, added: ‘I’m pleased to be joining forces in 2017 with the ISF which clearly has delivered some great opportunities for artists in England over recent years. We’ve been supporting artists from Wales to perform at SXSW for many years, and we’ve seen how important it is that they use the opportunity to make the right connections to develop their work artistically and economically. We look forward to developing this partnership to further connect artists from Wales to the wider UK and global music industries.’
For SXSW 2017, there will be three ISF application deadlines:
SXSW deadline one: 31 October 2016 - for those invited early - decisions sent early November
SXSW deadline two: 28 November 2016 - decisions sent mid-December
SXSW deadline three: 9 January 2017 - decisions sent mid-January
