More than 1m vinyl albums have been sold so far in 2014, the highest amount since 1996, new figures have revealed.
Official charts data, released by the BPI, predicted that the final sales figure for the year will rise towards 1.2m units with Pink Floyd’s the Endless River and Royal Blood’s self-titled debut album driving the increase.
This level of vinyl consumption has not been seen since 1996, when a total of 1,083,206 LPs were purchased.
The best-selling vinyl album of the year to date is AM by Arctic Monkeys with Jack White’s Lazaretto in second and Pink Floyd in third. Other best selling releases include albums by Oasis, the Stone Roses and Led Zeppelin.
BPI’s Gennaro Castaldo said: ‘We have entered an exciting best-of-all-worlds era where there is space and scope for all kinds of music to be discovered and enjoyed in every type of way, including on vinyl once again.
‘Many of us assumed it had become an obsolete format, but while the flame may have flickered, it never quite went out, and we are now seeing a burgeoning resurgence in demand led by exciting new acts such as Royal Blood that is likely to keep vinyl on our high streets for many more years to come.’
Further findings revealed that while vinyl sales are enjoying an upturn in fortunes, they still remain a niche product.
Sales of the medium accounted for just two percent of the UK’s recorded music market compared with a 10 per cent share for the fast-growing audio-streaming sector.
