Vinyl sales in the UK have crossed the half a million mark for the first time in a decade, new BPI analysis has revealed.

The success of releases from the likes of Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys and David Bowie are behind the increase in sales of the format.

According to the study of Official Charts Company data, an estimated 550,000 LPs have been purchased in 2013 reflecting a 100 percent increase on sales year-on-year.

Vinyl albums now account for 0.8 percent of all albums sold in the UK.

Geoff Taylor, BPI and BRIT Awards chief executive, said: ‘The LP is back in the groove. We’re witnessing a renaissance for records – they’re no longer retromania and are becoming the format of choice for more and more music fans. This year has been a treat for vinyl aficionados with releases from Daft Punk, David Bowie, Arctic Monkeys and Black Sabbath.

‘Whilst sales only account for a small percentage of the overall market, vinyl sales are growing fast as a new generation discovers the magic of 12 inch artwork, liner notes and the unique sound of analogue records, often accompanied by a download code for mp3s.’

Further findings from BPI revealed that Record Store Day was partly behind the revival of the format. The now annual celebration of independent record shops accounted for £2m worth of vinyl sales.
