UK vinyl sales make record labels more money than YouTube streams, the BPI’s chief executive has reportedly said.
Geoff Davis, the BPI and BRIT Awards CEO, made the comments during a talk at the Music Futures conference in Newcastle.
According to the Guardian, the music industry executive said that in 2014 vinyl sales accounted for more revenue for labels than 14bn music streams on YouTube.
Previous figures published by the BPI said that sales of vinyl albums made British labels £12.1m in 2013.
Vinyl has enjoyed a revival over recent years with more retailers stocking the format and its own official chart launching earlier this year.
Reports claimed that the BPI’s CEO suggested that YouTube was failing to offer fair remuneration for the use of music.
YouTube recently launched YouTube Red, a $9.99 per month subscription tier offering access to music without adverts.
Speaking at the Music Tech Talks event in London, organised by the Creative Industry Hub, Rebecca Lammers, Laika Network’s CEO, said that this new service has the potential to generate more money than Spotify.
