Spanning the decades that made up Bowie's pop career, the exhibition will showcase the many costumes and outfits that Bowie wore in music videos and on stage.
Bowie, now 65, constantly redefined his image across his career, touching on space-age themes and androgyny, as his alter ego Ziggy Stardust took over.
There was some negative commentary surrounding a 2007 installation of Kylie Minogue's clothing that included gold hot pants, and a pair of dungarees she wore during her time on Neighbours. While some critics are already naysaying a Bowie exhibition - stating that they do not want the Victoria and Albert becoming host to the 'cult of celebrity'- there are many people genuinely enthused about fashion from the man behind The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.
Among the exhibitions supporters is Paul Trynka, David Bowie's biographer. Talking to The Observer, he said: 'Although he's an artist who… doesn't tend to revisit his own past, there's a kind of contradiction in that he's collected his pieces for over two decades, lots of them historic and iconic, not just for Bowie fans but for popular fashion… He's always had a public presentation in mind.'
The exhibition is due to open at some point in 2013.
