Ultravox’s Vienna has been named as the most popular number two hit of all time in a new poll.
The song came top of a national poll of favourite number two singles organised by BBC Radio 2 and the Official Charts Company.
Fairytale of New York by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, Sit Down by James, Don Mclean’s American Pie and Golden Brown by the Stranglers made up the rest of the top five favourites.
A panel of industry experts including BBC Radio 1 presenter Annie Nightingale, BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Steve Lamacq and Martin Talbot, the Official Charts Company's Managing Director, picked their favourite number two hits before BBC Radio 2 listeners were able to vote.
Midge Ure, Ultravox frontman, said: ‘We are extremely pleased and very humbled to have been given this honorary number one, especially knowing the outstanding records which were also in the running. Strawberry Fields, Hound Dog and Wonderwall to name just a few.
‘A huge thanks to everyone who took the time and effort to vote for Vienna. It has restored our faith in the idea that the public will always recognise the good in music, and that this song has proved this.’
Further statistics from the Official Charts Company showed that Fairytale of New York has now sold more than one million copies.
The song has become the UK’s 126th million selling single 25 years after its release back in 1987.
