The study will measure the economic contribution of music in terms of Gross Added Value (GVA), exports and employment, and will provide data for government policymakers and stakeholders both in the industry and across the wider economy.

It’s the first time that such a survey has been shared with all PRS for Music songwriters, composers and publishers.

UK Music last year released an in-depth report into the music industry’s contribution to the economy, assessing the economic contribution of the music industry.

But the government has since conceded that the tools it has to measure the economic contribution of music 'do not allow the contribution of music to be satisfactorily identified in a separate category'.

Consequently, UK Music is urging the music industry work together and share data that will increase understanding of its economic contribution.

The study in 2014 will again draw upon data held by BPI, MPA, PPL and PRS for Music. But UK Music says this data must be complemented by survey responses from members of the music industry.

There are a number of survey categories, including specific sections for songwriters and composers, producers and managers.

PRS for Music members are urged to visit http://www.ukmusic.org/research/economic-surveys-2014/ to take part in the category that most fits them.

Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw to top prizes, inlcuding iPods and iTunes vouchers - but will only be eligible for the prize if they can prove membership of one of a number of music industry related organisations including PRS for Music, BASCA and the MPA.
