The UK Music Skills Academy, part of the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural, is to launch to improve access to music industry jobs for young people.

The academy will develop an infrastructure of learning and development to allow the music industry to engage directly with training and skills providers.

Course-led work experience, apprenticeships and paid internship programmes will all form part of the new venture with the likes of Cherry Red, Live Nation, Universal Music, Beggars Group and Ad Lib among the companies offering their support.

Students looking to go on to further education can enrol with one of the academy’s education partners such as the BRIT School or University of Hertfordshire.

Jo Dipple, UK Music chief executive officer, said: ‘There are thousands of different jobs in the music industry, from marketing new artists with an innovative digital strategy to rigging lights at a gig.

'These jobs are hugely prized and the purpose of our skills academy is to provide alumni with all the necessary tools to ensure they are at the front of the queue when music businesses are looking for new talent.’

Key elements of the academy’s infrastructure will include an apprenticeship scheme offering a wide range of companies grants of up to £2,000 through the creative development programme, an annual skills festival, a UK Music summer school and the creation of a network of rehearsal spaces.

The academy is a joint venture between UK Music and Creative and Cultural Skills. The former is a lobbying group working on behalf of the music industry while the latter is an independent charity set up to support the skills of the UK’s creative industries.
