UK Music chief executive Jo Dipple is calling on the industry and public to ensure a tribute single recorded in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox reaches number one for Christmas.

The single, a version of the Rolling Stones track You Can’t Always Get What You Want, is being released under the name Friends Of Jo Cox on Friday (16 December).

It features artists including Steve Harley, Ricky Wilson, KT Tunstall and David Gray, alongside members of the Parliament Choir and the Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus.

Also performing on the single are the cross-party parliamentary band MP4, which includes Kevin Brennan and Pete Wishart of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Music.

Chancellor Philip Hammond announced yesterday that the government will make a donation to the Jo Cox Foundation equivalent to the VAT payable on sales of the single.

The foundation was established following the death of the MP for Batley and Spen earlier this year.

Dipple said: ‘We wanted to see as much of the proceeds of this single were directed to good causes as possible and we are delighted the Treasury agrees.

‘Music brings people together just like Jo did throughout her life. By supporting this single, people can focus on compassion, kindness and hope as well as supporting causes which were close to her heart. We want to encourage everyone to buy this single to make it number one during the season of goodwill, to send out a clear message of unity.’
