Actress, Sandunes and percussionist Jivraj Singh are among the cutting edge artists to collaborate on a series of audiovisual events marking 70 years of Indian independence.
They will be joined by Jack Barnett of These New Puritans and vocalist Priya Purushothaman, who together will host Different Trains 1947 in Liverpool, London and Rajasthan next month.
The piece is inspired by Steve Reich's eighties’ composition Different Trains and the stories of those who lived through the events of 1947.
The live shows will feature new visual work from award-winning filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, featuring material from the BFI National Archive’s collection of rare films of pre-Independence India.
Reich's original piece recounted experiences of US and European train travel during World War Two and, in this forthcoming work, these artists will revisit this central idea to explore stories from the UK and India, during the period of Indian Independence.
At the Liverpool event, electronic music duo Darkstar will also present Trackbed, a new composition in collaboration with young adult members of migrant communities.
Different Trains 1947 is presented by Metal, in partnership with Warp Records, Barbican Centre and Boiler Room, plus Indian partners Wild City and What About Art?
