Last week’s Eurosonic Noorderslag festival showcased some of the UK’s brightest emerging talent alongside hundreds of panels, keynote speakers and interviews. PRS for Music’s Jules Parker and Will Page went along to contribute.
Eurosonic, now in its 26th year, has become one of the region’s largest showcases, with 260 up-and-coming acts scheduled for venues, stages and conference halls across the Dutch city of Groningen.
The event kicked off with the European Border Breaker Awards, which recognises successful artists and songwriters who have made waves across the continent during the previous year. Anna Calvi performed at the Jools Holland-hosted ceremony, also bagging the prize for the UK this year (full winner’s list below).
British acts that appeared over the next four days included BRIT Critic’s Choice Award Emeli Sande, Vondelpark, Jessie Ware, Baxter Dury, Zulu Winter and Lucy Rose.
PRS for Music’s Jules Parker took part in a panel session entitled The Cross Border Perspective, alongside freelance journalist Emmanuel Legrand, artist manager Peter Jenner, Nesta president Robby Towns and Ben L’Oncle Soul manager Jérémie Charbonnel.
The panel discussed the secret of cross border success, the value of funding and the importance of copyright management. They found that UK and US acts often had an advantage due to greater funding and backing from companies including record labels and publishers. All agreed that export success lies in specific fields, with extraordinary acts becoming trailblazers, such as Air, Phoenix or ABBA.
Meanwhile, PRS for Music’s Will Page joined a debate on the effects of discounted ticketing within the live music sector, alongside consultant and editor Greg Parmley, Ogilvy Advertising’s Tara Austin, Seatwave marketing director James Hamlin and Alan Day from Kilimanjaro Live concert promoters.
The debate was based on Page’s A House Divided: Getting to Grips with Groupon publication, which analysed the controversial deal Groupon made with Live Nation last year to deal with the problem of empty concert seats. For more information on A House Divided, click here.
