England’s hopes of reaching the World Cup Final may be over, but football anthem Three Lions just hit the Number One spot in the UK Charts, breaking an all-time chart record in the progress.
The Baddiel, Skinner & Lightning Seeds track knocked George Ezra’s Shotgun from the top spot and scored a UK Number One with an impressive 80,000 combined sales this week, comprised of 43,000 sales, 6.8m audio streams and 5.2m video streams.
On the run up to England’s heart-breaking semi-final appearance against Croatia on Wednesday fans made a concerted effort to get the track to Number One in support of the team, with encouragement from Ezra himself.
This is the first time in the charts' 66-year history that a song has topped the charts four times with the same artist line-up.
The original 1996 version enjoyed two separate one week stints at the Number One spot, while the 1998 remake had a three week spell at Number One. Now England’s recent World Cup run has propelled the track to the top of the charts once again.
Reacting to the news that his song had reached Number One, David Baddiel said: ‘Well, this is awkward.’ With Frank Skinner adding: ‘I must say, as consolation prizes go…’
