Thom Yorke has unveiled his new solo LP, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, via BitTorrent.

The album is a follow up to the Radiohead and Atoms for Peace frontman’s debut solo effort, The Eraser from 2006.

BitTorrent uses a peer-to-peer network helping connect users and their computers together. It means they can move large files quicker than standard downloads from a server.

In a statement, Thom and producer Nigel Godrich said: ‘As an experiment we are using a new version of BitTorrent to distribute a new Thom Yorke record. The new Torrent files have a pay gate to access a bundle of files. The files can be anything, but in this case is an 'album'. It's an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around.

‘If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work. Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves, bypassing the self-elected gate-keepers. If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.'

The album is priced at $5.98 (£3.69). So far the record has sold in excess of 380,000 copies.

Both Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich have been vocal commentators on the merits of music streaming for artists. Click here for more information on their removal of music from Spotify last year.
