An online campaign to name a newly discovered heavy metal Lemmium after Motorhead's frontman has almost reached 150,000 signatures.
The initiative, which launched on Monday 4 January, has enjoyed some high profile endorsements with the likes of Duff McKagan from Guns and Roses as well as Professor Brian Cox all voicing their support.
The petition states: ‘Heavy rock lost its most iconic figure over Christmas with the sudden and unexpected death of Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister. Lemmy was a force of nature and the very essence of Heavy Metal.
‘We believe it is fitting that the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry recommend that one of the four new discovered heavy metals in the Periodic table is named Lemmium.’
Gennaro Castaldo, spokesperson for the BPI, added: ‘Lemmy was a true rock legend, who will be much missed. Although future generations will always be able to enjoy his iconic music, it would be wonderful to create an enduring legacy that will almost literally set Lemmy's name in stone for all time.’
Lemmy passed away over the Christmas period after being diagnosed with cancer.
