Leeds-based jazz act Stretch Trio have won Help Musicians UK’s Peter Whittingham Jazz Award.
The group have secured £4,000 worth of funding as part of the prize. The accolade comes after a busy year for the band, having released their debut album Antithesis, performed at Gateshead International Jazz Festival alongside Bill Frisell, Jack Dejohnette and Polar Bear, and joined the all-new Jazz North Introduces initiative.
Stretch Trio were chosen as winners by an expert panel including trombonist Dennis Rollins, saxophonist Pete Wareham and promoter Justin McKenzie.
In a statement, the band said: ‘We are thrilled to have been offered the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award 2014. It comes at a crucial moment in our career and will enable us to develop the band in a way that would not otherwise have been possible.’
The 2013 winner of the award was saxophonist Phil Meadows while previous recipients have included Soweto Kinch and Led Bib.
The prize was established in memory of Peter Whittingham, a music expert in survival medicine.
