Steve Strange, frontman of eighties pop act Visage and manager of the Blitz Club, has sadly passed away aged 55.
The Welsh pop star, best known as a key player in the New Romantic movement back in the eighties, is reported to have died from a heart attack. He was on holiday in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt before being taken ill.
Steve and his outfit Visage were best known for their hit Fade to Grey. The song reach number eight in the UK charts in 1980.
He was also manager of the Blitz Club which acted as the unofficial hub for London’s New Romantic scene. Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Boy George were all regulars in the venue.
Marc Green, label manager at August Day Recordings, said: ‘We are extremely saddened to announce that Steve Strange died at 11.15 local time on Thursday 12 February in Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital, Egypt.
‘Steve died in his sleep of heart failure. Steve’s family, band members and friends are all distraught at this sudden news of his untimely death. Steve’s family request privacy at this extremely difficult time.’
Boy George tweeted: ‘Heartbroken about the death of my friend Steve Strange. So bloody sad. Such a big part of my life!’
Steve had been hospitalised in December last year in Bridgend, Wales with a number of infections.
Fade to Grey reached number one in both Germany and Switzerland and was the first of five UK top 40 hits for the band.
