Steve Mac, writer of hits for One Direction, Westlife and JLS, has been named as ASCAP songwriter of the year.

Steve was honoured at the 33rd annual awards hosted by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) last night (9 October) at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

The event is organised by ASCAP to honour the songwriter, composer and publisher members of PRS for Music whose repertoire is licensed by the US collecting society.

Steve, who enjoyed success with his You Make Me Feel performed by Cobra Starship and The Wanted’s Glad You Came, also received the song of the year award for the latter.

Elsewhere, Universal Music Publishing retained its title as publisher of the year for its most-performed winning songs including the theme to Downton Abbey (John Lunn) and Viva La Vida by Coldplay.

Paul Connolly, Universal Music Publishing Europe and UK president, said: ‘Amazing songwriters, plus hardworking staff and superlative catalogue equals international hits plus ASCAP publisher of the year. Again! We’re very proud.’

Other songwriter winners include Taio Cruz for Dynamite and Without You, Alex Clare for Too Close, Phil Collins for In the Air Tonight, Annie Lennox for Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) and Jessie J for Domino.
