Spotify announces major partnership with Samsung

Spotify has announced that it will now be the official music listening provider for all Samsung devices, including smart phones, TV's and tablets.

Spotify has secured a major partnership with tech-giant and smart phone manufacturer, Samsung - making it the official music service provider across devices.

In an online Q&A last night (Thursday 9th) Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said his intention behind the partnership was to create a ‘seamless music listening experience’ for users.

He said this aim is something that would have been difficult for either company to achieve alone.

As the official music listening app of their phones, this integration will make is easier for users to connect their Samsung devices, including TV’s, phones, tablets, speakers and watches, to Spotify’s catalogue of 35 million songs.

Samsung say that using the Spotify app will become another part of the set-up experience for their smart phones, which were the most popular devices on the market as of the second quarter of 2018 - shipping 71.5m devices.

The app will also be closely integrated with Samsung’s voice assistant, Bixby, meaning that Spotify will be the phone’s default music playback app when users ask for a song to be played via voice control.

It is said by the company’s that this new integration will allow users to switch seamlessly between music listening devices as they move from room to room in their houses.

Ek said: ‘We believe that this significant long-term partnership will provide Samsung users across millions of devices with the best possible music streaming experience and make discovering new music easier than ever -- with even more opportunities to come.

‘Of course, it will also help artists reach new fans. Our goal has always been to make music accessible to everyone by giving a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art and billions of fans the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by it.’

This partnership is the latest in the battle between Spotify and Apple to retain larger shares of the streaming market.
