Georgie Buchanan, Gemma Nash, Blasio Kavuma, Jason Yarde and Samantha Fernando are the five composers selected for the Sound and Music Pathways programme.

Launched in spring 2016, Pathways is a strand of the Sound and Music Active Encouragement work that seeks to explore how to address inequalities in opportunities for composers.

The programme is specifically aimed at UK artists who are either registered disabled or from backgrounds other than White British.

The selected participants will join a bespoke residency programme. This will kick off with a six months of coaching and mentoring before composers will be connected with a residency partner, chosen in close consultation with the composers, to create one or more new works.

Georgie Buchanan is a vocalist, sound explorer and social artist based in Leeds. Gemma Nash is a sound artist with an interest in the connections between medicine, disability and ethics while Blasio Kavuma is a composer and curator based in London working across a range of platforms, including film, visual art and performance art.

Composer, arranger, producer and saxophonist Jason Yarde has previously worked with the likes of Louis Moholo, 4hero, Plan B to Britten Sinfonia and Wretch 32.

Samantha Fernando is a composer who has worked with the London Sinfonietta, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Silbersee Vocal Ensemble and the Riot Ensemble.

Visit the Sound and Music website to find out more about the initiative and meet the composers.
