Mahogany Opera Group has launched Snappy Operas, a new series of ten short operas to make the music more accessible for young people.
Snappy Operas is a series of ten, ten-minute long, operas being developed by ten composer/writer creative teams working closely with groups of young people across ten areas of the UK.
Each piece will be written for children’s voices and a flexible accompaniment. This means they will be performed as widely as possible, with the intention that they can be learned and performed in a day.
Luke Carver Goss, Emily Hall, Gwyneth Herbert, Toby Litt, Luke Styles and Errollyn Wallen are among the composers working on the project. The ten pieces are being created between 2016 and 2018.
Frederic Wake-Walker, Mahogany Opera Group artistic director, said: ‘Mahogany has witnessed the power of music and theatre to enrich children’s lives in so many ways and believes that every child should have the opportunity to participate in an opera before they leave school.
‘With Snappy Operas we will create an enduring theatrical and musical resource for primary school children, who may otherwise not have a chance to experience the dramatic possibilities of opera. We hope that the Snappy Operas themselves - which will emerge out of some hugely rich collaborations - come to occupy a significant place in the repertoire of entertaining and engaging theatre for children.’
The initiative is supported by Michael Tippett Musical Foundation and the PRS for Music Foundation.
