Skepta, grime MC, producer and songwriter has been announced as recipient of the Outstanding Contribution prize at the AIM Independent Music Awards.

He will receive the honour at the event at the Brewery in Clerkenwell, London on 8 September.

Sponsored by Merlin, the prize celebrates an independent artist with a celebrated body of work who continue to shape their genre and be a source of inspiration to new artists.

Mistajam, AIM Awards judge and BBC Radio 1/1Xtra presenter, said: ‘Since grime was born out of the ashes of UK garage, Skepta has been a pioneer of the sound, of the DIY business model and the culture.

‘DJ, producer, writer, MC, record label boss and performer - there's no denying Skepta has put in the blood sweat and tears for the last 10 whole years and now, as he stands on the cusp of true international acclaim, it feels right to award Skepta for his immense contribution so far to British Music.’

The Tottenham-raised Londoner has enjoyed a stellar career, with five top 40 singles, multiple mixtapes, featured spots and a hotly anticipated third studio album Konnichiwa due out soon.

2015 has been one of his most profile years to date, leading a crew of grime MCs on stage at the BRIT awards with Kanye West and touring the US with recent single, Shutdown.
