Samuel Wesley Lewis has won the top award in the New Cobbett Prize for Composition with his work Sequenza for string quintet with bass.
The award was presented at an event at the Forge in Camden with Barnaby Martin's Lazarus and Laurence Osborn's Living Floors named as the runner ups.
The winning and second and third place composition will be recorded by the Berkley Ensemble for release on Resonus Classics in 2015, part of their ongoing work to offer long term exposure to new and emerging composers.
The New Cobbett Prize is inspired by the life and pioneering work of philanthropist and founder of the original Cobbett Competition, Walter Willson Cobbett who commissioned many of the early works of Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams, amongst others.
The ensemble is thought to be one of the UK's leading chamber groups, having collaborated with the likes of Tom Poster, Nicholas Daniel and Sir Thomas Allen.
