Sam Smith has set a new chart record with his debut album In the Lonely Hour achieving its 67th week in the top ten.

Official Charts Company (OCC) statistics revealed that this is the longest ever run in the Official Albums Chart top ten for a debut album.

In the Lonely Hour has stayed in the top ten since it was released in May 2014. It debuted that week at number one with first week sales of 101,000.

Commenting, Sam said: ‘What can I even say to this? I am completely and utterly moved and overwhelmed at this achievement.

‘I am forever thankful to my team but most importantly to the British public for making this happen and buying my album. This moment is one to tell the grandkids and maybe their grandkids.’

The singer songwriter’s debut LP has achieved numerous accolades since release including two number one singles Money On My Mind and Stay With Me.

The chart record was previously held by Emeli Sande. Her debut album Our Version Of Events achieved 66 consecutive weeks in the top ten from its February 2012 release.
