Sam Smith has scored a chart double, topping both the UK singles and album charts, new Official Charts Company (OCC) figures show.

Lay Me Down, Sam’s collaboration with John Legend, debuted at number one on the singles chart with combined sales of over 105,000.

The song is Sam’s fourth number one in less than two years following La La La with Naughty Boy, Money On My Mind and Stay With Me.

Elsewhere in the album charts, Sam’s debut LP In The Lonely Hour returned to the top for an eighth week.

This latest achievement makes chart history, becoming the first album by a male solo artist to reach the top on six different occasions.

Only three other artist albums have ever beaten the tally - Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water (eight), Adele’s 21 (seven) and Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events (seven).

In The Lonely Hour, which was streamed more than 3,600 times finishing over 12,000 chart sales ahead of midweek leader Madonna.
