Sam Smith has made chart history with the first ever official number one James Bond theme.
Official Charts Company figures revealed that Writing’s On The Wall, written by Sam and long-term collaborator Jimmy Napes, topped the charts with combined sales and streams of 70,000 copies, finishing 13,000 ahead of Justin Bieber’s What Do You Mean? at number two.
The song will be the title track for the forthcoming James Bond film Spectre. Previously the highest chart position for a James Bond theme has been number two with Adele’s Skyfall and Duran Duran’s A View To A Kill taking the accolade.
Sam said: ‘It was such an honour to be asked to write and record Writing’s On The Wall and it’s incredible that it’s become the first number one Bond theme song.
‘It’s been an unforgettable experience working with Barbara [Broccoli] and Sam [Mendes] to become part of this British legacy. I couldn’t have done this without my fans - this is a special moment I’ll never forget.’
Writing’s On The Wall becomes Sam’s fifth Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart.
Meanwhile, in the album charts, sibling duo Disclosure have landed the number one spot with their second LP Caracal. The record, which features Sam Smith, The Weeknd and Gregory Porter, is the follow up to their chart topping debut Settle.
