Sam Smith has passed one million album sales in both UK and the US in 2014 with his debut In the Lonely Hour.
According to the Official Charts Company (OCC), the singer songwriter is the only artist to reach this milestone this year.
In the UK only Ed Sheeran has hit the million mark in 2014 with his second release X while on the other side of the pond Taylor Swift and the Frozen soundtrack are the only releases to achieve the same level of success.
Martin Talbot, OCC chief executive, said: ‘Many festive congratulations to Sam. To hit a million anywhere is impressive, but to become the only artist in the world to do so on both sides of the Atlantic is quite remarkable.
‘His journey in 2014, from unknown newcomer winning the Brit Awards’ Critics Choice award to internationally renowned double million-seller, has been incredible.’
In The Lonely Hour became the fastest-selling debut album of the year in the UK when it went straight in at number one on the albums chart in May this year with first-week sales of 102,000.
The record has also seen a string of successful singles, including number one hits Money On My Mind and Stay With Me.
