British singer songwriter Sam Smith has scored the fastest selling debut LP of 2014 with his record, In The Lonely Hour.

According to the Official Charts Company (OCC), the artist sold 101,000 copies over the last seven days since its release.

The sales make it the fastest selling debut album of the year so far and the third fastest selling LP of 2014 after Coldplay’s Ghost Stories (168,000 first week sales) and Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love (109,000 copies in week one).

Sam said: ‘It’s amazing! I was a bit scared a few days ago because I knew that Coldplay’s album had come out. I’m so happy!’

The news comes after a very successful year for the new artist - he hit the top spot last May with Naughty Boy’s La La La while in in January he came top of the BBC’s Sound Of 2014 poll.

In February he was awarded the Critics’ Choice prize at the BRIT Awards and has enjoyed two further number one singles including Money On My Mind and Stay With Me.

Elsewhere in the album charts, Coldplay’s Ghost Stories, the band’s sixth studio album, has now sold almost a quarter of a million UK sales after shifting an additional 75,000 copies during the last week.

Meanwhile, Anglo American house and techno producer SecondCity has hit the top spot with debut single I Wanna Feel.
