Sam Smith, winner of the BRITs Critics’ Choice 2014 award, has scored his debut solo number one single with Money on my Mind.

According to figures from the Official Chart Company (OCC), the single sold 108,000 copies to take the top spot. It is the fastest selling release by a winner of this BRIT to-date.

Previously, Sam enjoyed a number one with Naughty Boy on their collaboration La La La while his single with Disclosure - Latch - also dented the top 20 of the UK singles chart.

Sam said: ‘It feels unbelievable, man! It's completely overwhelming and I don't actually know what to do with myself! It feels amazing.

‘When La La La went to number one, I wrote quite a lot of that song and it was kind of just as much mine as it was Naughty Boy's, but having my own song at number one is just absolutely incredible.’

Sam’s debut at the top brings an end to Clean Bandit’s four-week stint at the top with Rather Be with the song dropping to number three.

Elsewhere in the album charts, the impact of the BRIT Awards can be seen with Bastille’s album Bad Blood leaping nine places to return to number one after their award win and live performance.

Double winners Arctic Monkeys saw their fifth album AM climb nine places to the number two spot.
