Rockers Royal Blood have enjoyed the largest sales spike during the Mercury Prize nominations period and the biggest overall total sales of all shortlisted acts, new statistics show.
According to the Official Charts Company (OCC), the duo have shifted 59,000 further copies since they were nominated.
This gives the band a total sales of 154,000 for their self-titled debut. It has helped Royal Blood’s record become the fastest selling rock debut album of the last three years.
FKA Twigs - who landed at number 16 on the albums chart with LP1 in August, has seen her sales almost double. Elsewhere Kate Tempest has seen sales of Everybody Down rise by 124 percent seen the shortlist was unveiled.
Martin Talbot, OCC chief executive, said: ‘Royal Blood set the official albums chart alight this summer when they hit number one with the fastest-selling British rock debut in three years, and if the Mercury Prize was decided based on pure sales, it would most definitely be a one-horse race for the band.
‘This year’s shortlist is full of faces yet to land on the radar of the wider British public, but all deserving of a place under the Mercury spotlight. Who the judges ultimately choose, is anyone’s guess. But certainly, if this were the public choosing, it could be between FKA Twigs, Kate Tempest, Royal Blood or GoGo Penguin.’
The bookies currently have newcomers FKA Twigs and Kate Tempest as favourites to win.
The 2014 Barclaycard Mercury Prize Awards Show takes place at the Roundhouse tonight (Wednesday 29 October).
