Rough Trade, the UK independent music retailer, is to open a new outlet in New York on 25 November.

According to Billboard, the independent company, which also created Rough Trade Records and was responsible for releasing records by the likes of the Smiths and Mazzy Star, will open its first US shop in Brooklyn.

The store was originally planned for an April 2012 launch but was held back by what Stephen Godfroy, Rough Trade co-president, described as ‘numerous obstacles in the construction planning and building process’.

He told Billboard:New York and London are similar in many ways - they're kaleidoscopic celebrations of global differences and similarities.

‘They enjoy an open-mindedness, a deep respect for the past, a voracious appetite for the future, which all combines to produce a climate that suits our individual approach to music retail.’

The new retail outlet is expected to sell new music in multiple formats while also having space for live performances and in-store gigs.

Rough Trade New York will link with its UK sister London stores, Rough Trade East and Rough Trade West.
