Robbie Williams has scored the 1,000th number one album with his latest record Swings Both Ways.

The solo star’s record has topped the charts 57 and a half years after Frank Sinatra’s Songs For Swingin’ Lovers became the UK’s first ever number one.

According to the Official Charts Company (OCC), Robbie has sold 18.6m UK album across his solo career and 55m globally. This latest chart achievement brings his total of number ones to 11, meaning he is now tied with Elvis Presley as the male solo artist with most number one albums.

Robbie said: ‘I am over the moon that Swings Both Ways is number one! And such an honour to be the 1000th album in that spot too, following Frank Sinatra who was the first person in that spot and my hero. Thanks to everyone who bought the record, see you all on the tour next year!’

The record sold more than 109,000 copies during its first week of release to take the top spot.

Jake Bugg’s second album Shangri La reached second place in the charts while JLS with their Goodbye-Greatest Hits was another new entry at number six.

Meanwhile in the UK singles charts, Lily Allen and her cover of Keane’s Somewhere We Only Know from the John Lewis Christmas advert hit the top spot.

Lily beat Bastille’s Of The Night (number two) by just 660 copies.
