Mick Farren, former NME journalist, singer and activist, has died aged 69 after collapsing on stage on Saturday (27 July).

The 60s counter culture figure was performing with his band The Deviants at London’s Borderline at the Atomic Sunshine Festival when he lost consciousness.

A post on the Deviants Facebook page from the band said: ‘The Deviants and friends all over the world are deeply shocked and saddened after Mick collapsed on stage last night and never regained consciousness, despite heroic efforts by the ambulance crew. Goodbye old friend.’

Mick was born in Cheltenham and moved to London during the sixties founding The Deviants in 1967. He went on to release three albums with the band before working for the NME as a music journalist.

He wrote a famous piece in 1976 entitled The Titanic Sails at Dawn, which pre-empted the birth of punk. He also wrote more than 20 books including an account of 60s counter culture called Give The Anarchist a Cigarette.

Elvis Died For Somebody’s Sins But Not Mine, a career spanning anthology of his writings, was published earlier this year.
