A record collection containing every single in the top forty since the start of the charts has been sold at auction for £70,000.

The collection spans six decades of chart music and was the lifetime’s work of collector Keith Sivyer.

From 1954, Keith visited his local record shop every week. He eventually collected over 45,000 records at an estimated cost of £250,000 plus.

The collection went under the hammer in an auction hosted by Ewbank’s. Digital music cloud platform Omnifone’s successful bid has ensured the collection remains together and in the UK.

Robert Ashcroft, PRS for Music’s chief executive officer, said: ‘The Sivyer collection is a rare and historically important musical treasure charting the diversity of the UK’s most loved songs.

‘Among these valuable sound recordings are thousands of works by PRS for Music songwriters and composers whom we are proud to represent. PRS for Music, on behalf of its 111,000 members, are delighted that Omnifone has acquired all the lots and kept this essential collection together and in the UK.’

Omnifone is to re-establish the Sivyer record collection in its offices in West London.

The company plans to establish an experiential exhibition to bring the collection to life and to continue the collector’s legacy.
