has teamed up with PPL and CMU to host a programme of events at The Great Escape next month.

The festival runs from 14-16 May in Brighton and will see the society hosting panel sessions, DIY discussion forums and a drinks reception.

PRS for Music’s sessions kick off on Thursday 14 May with the Music Licensing: Explained at Last! strand in conjunction with PPL and CMU.

The strand is aimed at debunking the myths surrounding copyright, licensing and royalties, and will feature insight and analysis from BASCA, IFPI, CISAC, Clintons, Believe Digital and more.

Please see below for full details and running times.

After the event, PRS for Music will host a drinks party from 6-7pm at Myhotel, Brighton, with DJs Alex and Prince.

This year’s closing day, on 16 May, will be all about future talent and DIY, with a full programme for aspiring artists and songwriters, and young people interesting in working in music.

There will be tips and advice in a packed schedule that will finale with Blur’s Dave Rowntree in conversation.

PRS for Music’s education and outreach manager Andy Ellis will be on hand to chat to members and emerging songwriters throughout the day, and will also moderate a panel on DIY music careers.

MUSIC LICENSING: EXPLAINED AT LAST!
A CMU Insights conference strand at The Great Escape, with PRS for Music and PPL
Thursday 14 May, Dukes @ Komedia, Brighton.

11.00am-11.45am HOW MUSIC RIGHTS WORK
A beginners guide to music copyright – basically everything you need to know in one hour! Starting with the basics, CMU Business Editor Chris Cooke will explain how music rights fit together, how music licensing works (or doesn’t, as the case may be), and how the cash works its way through the system. Plus the lowdown on performer rights.

11.45am-12.30pm WHERE’S THE MONEY?
Find out how music rights are making money in 2015 as we process the latest facts and figures from across the world regarding recorded music, neighbouring rights and music publishing. IFPI’s Alex Jacob will guide us through the label group’s global record industry stats. PPL’s Camilla Waite will explore the growth of neighbouring rights income and the increased importance of SoundExchange in the US. And Media Insight Consulting’s Chris Carey will shed light on CISAC’s data on music publishing worldwide.

12.30pm-1.00pm HOW STREAMING SERVICES ARE LICENSED PART 1
Whether personalised radio or fully on-demand, freemium or premium, audio or video, recording rights or publishing rights, CMU’s Chris Cooke provides a concise overview of how digital services are licensed.

1.45pm-2.30pm HOW STREAMING SERVICES ARE LICENSED PART 2
Digging deeper into digital licensing, our panel of experts explain how each part of the digital licensing matrix works, and give some background into how the current systems came into being. Plus how do labels, publishers, artists and songwriters get their money? Lee Morrison from Believe Digital, Tom Frederickse from Clintons and more offer insights.

2.30pm-3.45pm THE DIGITAL PIE DEBATE
The Great Escape puts the spotlight on one of the biggest music industry debates of the moment: the division of streaming revenues between each of the stakeholders in music. Vick Bain – CEO of the British Academy Of Songwriters, Composers & Authors – leads the discussion, explaining why the songwriting community believes the current system, which sees record companies received a much bigger cut of streaming income than publishers and songwriters, is unsustainable. Plus hear from representatives of all the stakeholders in recorded music, including labels, publishers, artists and songwriters.

4.00pm-5.00pm THE DATA CHALLENGE
CMU’s Chris Cooke and CI’s Kieron Faller explain why good data is so important in digital music. What data is out there and what challenges do we still need to tackle? A panel of experts will debate.
