PRS for Music membership director Karen Buse is among the 12 female trailblazers to make it onto the Music Week Roll of Honour at the 2017 Women in Music Awards.
Buse, who is executive director of both membership and international at the collecting society, has been in the rights business for 28 years.
Always at the forefront of the campaign for creators’ rights, her vision and knowledge of the global collective rights management landscape has helped propel PRS for Music’s continued commercial success, as well as the transformation of the society’s standing with its members.
During her 12 years as head of the international department, she has trebled revenues to £250m, while at the helm of the membership team she tends to the needs of 125,000 songwriter, composer and publisher members.
Buse told Music Week: ‘It’s really important to find men who champion women and together help break down stereotypes.
‘I would also encourage them to be themselves and don’t try to be someone that they’re not. It can sometimes be tricky to get your voice heard in an alpha male-dominated environment but don’t try to be something that you’re not; keep your own character and personality. And, most importantly – as females – look out for each other.’
Robert Ashcroft, chief executive of PRS for Music, told M: ‘I would like to congratulate Karen Buse on being inducted into the Music Week Women in Music Roll of Honour.
‘In her 28 years with us, Karen has worked tirelessly both to ensure that our members are effectively represented around the globe and that we provide them with the high level of service they have every right to expect.
'Karen has long been a champion of women in the music industry and, during her time in charge of membership, has seen the proportion of women joining the society as members grow to one third, significantly improving the overall proportion of women members in recent years,' he added.
Alongside Buse, BASCA chief executive Vick Bain, AIM marketing director Lara Baker, Attitude is Everything’s Suzanne Bull MBE and Amber Davis, A&R director at Warner/Chappell are also being honoured.
