Gold Badge Awards 2015
John Logan, general secretary of PRS for Music Members Benevolent Fund, has been honoured with a Gold Badge Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA).

He received the accolade for the unique contribution he’s made to the professional lives of songwriters and composers over the years.

Logan joined the Performing Right Society (PRS) as a junior clerk in the index department in 1973.

At the age of 23, in 1978, he was appointed both deputy registrar of the society and assistant secretary to the Benevolent Fund, which provides support to members, widows and other dependents.

In 1985 he was appointed general secretary of the fund, moving full time in 1990.

He is also freeman of the City of London and a volunteer member of the executive committee of the Royal Variety Charity (formerly the Entertainments Artistes’ Benevolent Fund).

On receiving his award at The Savoy ceremony last week, he said: ‘I’ve attended a few Gold Badge Awards over the years. I’ve seen many famous songwriters, composers and musicians receive their awards - as well as other people not so famous – each recipient recognised by the academy for their unique contribution to this wonderful industry. But I never ever thought that one day I would be joining them! What a privilege! The absolute highlight of my 42 years at PRS.

‘In truth I’m just a cog in a very large wheel. To be a part, however small and administrative, of an organisation that exists to reward those whose music gives so much pleasure and happiness to the world is both humbling and inspiring.’

Peter Gabriel, Leo Sayer, Kim Wilde and BBC Radio 6 Music’s Tom Robinson were also among this year’s Gold Badge Award recipients.

They were joined by composer Iain Sutherland, Mark King (bassist, Level 42), jazz singer songwriter Norma Winstone MBE and and several other key figures working across the UK music industry.
