Pop music fans are the most ‘narrow-minded’ when it comes to listening to other genres, a new study has said.
Research by McMaster University’s Digital Music Lab studied approximately a billion song downloads from the past two years.
The results found that indie fans are most likely to listen to other genres, while fans of pop music are the least likely to diversify and head outside their musical genre of choice to get their fix.
A fans’ level of ‘open-mindedness’ is defined by their tendency to listen to music outside their preferred genre.
Professor Matthew Woolhouse told CBC News: ‘Some genres are very exclusive. That says something about the type of person who likes that type of music. We think it relates to personality, it has to do with more complex sociological reasons that we’re currently exploring.
‘We’re trying to get a handle on what features about a musical style [and what] make[‘s] it more attractive to people who are exclusive.’
The full list, ranked from top to bottom, is below:
Indie
Jazz
Folk
Country
Classical

Metal
