Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron has passed away aged 56 after a long battle with illness.

The musician, real name Philip Ryan, reportedly died Tuesday (8 October) morning at his home in Dublin.

He was diagnosed with a form of in-operable cancer in 2007 but given the all-clear after treatment. However, the illness returned last year.

In a statement on their website, the Pogues said: ‘After a long illness Philip passed away peacefully this morning. We all send our sincere condolences to his family.’

Philip joined the Pogues from their 1985 second album Rum, Sodomy & the Lash and went on to write one of their most popular hits, Thousands are Sailing.

He was an influential musician in the Irish punk scene having formed seminal group, The Radiators from Space. He also oversaw the mastering of the Pogues back catalogue ahead of a re-issue.
